I’ve been coaching the group classes now for over 4 years, but I’ve been working at Ardent for almost 6 (crazy to say that out loud). I started by doing personal training and coaching a small group class that ran outside of the normal group classes you know and love today! Austin convinced me that working at Ardent instead of Jimmy John’s made the most sense. You know, because that’s what I went to school for, hahaha.
I have an ACSM EP-C which is an exercise physiologist certification that you need a four-year degree to obtain. Through ACSM, I also have an EIM (exercise is medicine) cert that stays with me as long as I am certified. Lastly, I have a Level 1 USA Weightlifting certification. My style is definitely laid back, but I’ll be there to push you when you need it. I believe exercise is so important and that it’s never too late to start. I never want to intimidate someone or make them feel less than because they can’t do something that someone else is able to.
Seeing improvements in members, whether that be mental or physical! People realizing that they don’t need to lose a ton of weight or hit a crazy PR to be happy and successful when it comes to exercise is the best part. Being strong and having muscle is cool. Also, changing your mindset when it comes to societal pressures is huge. Seeing this happen is really a beautiful thing.
I love playing guitar, piano, and painting. The bass guitar is my favorite (probably because it’s the one I’m the best at, lol).
CLEANS!!! I love cleans. They make me feel so strong and are technical, so it never gets boring.
How important NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) is! It’s all the activity you do by just living and being throughout your day. The higher this is, the more calories your body burns while at rest. That’s why I feel that walking is very underrated. Walk further and walk more often! We spend more time outside of the gym than in it. What we do in that time period is, dare I say, more important than the gym at times.
Reminding myself that when I’m old, I want to be agile and strong. Also, doing something I actually enjoy. There are so many ways to be active and lift, and if something isn’t for you, chances are there’s another way that you’ll like better.
Strength training for sure. Advocate for strong, big muscles!! Because who doesn’t want to be stronger?
How welcoming and encouraging everyone is. New people always mention how welcoming the community is, and it’s one thing for me to say that as a coach, but for another member to say it? Means everything. It’s a safe space for everyone, and that’s something that you can’t find everywhere.
Heather S. has changed her mindset when it comes to lifting and eating, and it’s been awesome to see. Once she saw that she was capable of lifting heavy shit, it was game over. She continues to show up and make progress, and that’s inspiring to me.
