Brief personal history and journey towards beginning your CrossFit journey:
Well, in August of 2015 I moved to Oshkosh from Madison. I am a nurse working nights on the trauma unit at UWHC, and continue to commute for work. Additionally, I am in a Family Nurse Practitioner online master’s program based in St. Louis (graduating May 2017 – YAY!). My boyfriend was living in Oshkosh, and I was spending about half my time here. We bought a house, I moved up and was able to go part-time at work in order to accommodate the required clinical hours for school. Since the move, I have felt that I have been split between several places. With online school, I spend a lot (ok the majority) of my free time studying, on my own. When you’re an adult/not in college, meeting people/friends in a new place is a bit challenging especially when you work in a different city! I felt that I needed to find something in Oshkosh to feel like I actually lived here, rather than just visiting. I had heard about the great community aspect of CrossFit gyms and found that super appealing. That is the short story!
What brought you to CrossFit Oshkosh?
As stated above, I wanted to find something that connected me to the area. Quite a few of of my close friends do CrossFit and love it. I had only been to one class before and thought it was intense but also super fun. I saw a post on Facebook for CrossFit Oshkosh and decided to give it a try!
Your first impression of CrossFit Oshkosh?
My first impression? I was super intimidated. I had NO idea what all these acronyms meant! I also felt that I had no clue what I was doing. However, soon after I realized how friendly the coaches and other people at the gym are – everyone is super helpful!
What has been your biggest hurdle since starting?
Learning the lifting techniques. Sometimes it will feel really great and other times it is more akin to a baby deer learning to walk – super akward – or at least that’s how it feels!
What is your favorite aspect of CrossFit?
I think the competitive factor with yourself is incredibly motivating for me. I am actually a very competitive person, especially with myself. With the way the workouts are designed, I really like the notable progress made week to week. I also really enjoy how challenging the workouts are – you feel very accomplished once you’re done! The variety of the workout is also appealing – changing it up daily and always feeling challenged.
What are your current goals in CrossFit?
A pull-up. They are my nemesis. I have a wonky shoulder from a previous injury and pull-ups are my least favorite….but that’s what you’re supposed to work on the most, right? Right.
What is something we don’t know about you?
I never took gym class past 7th grade. Growing up I was a competitive figure skater practicing about 2 hours per day 6 days per week. In order to train during first hour before school, I was granted a “gym-modification” (not something they do anymore). So, I got to skate 0600-0800 before school rather than ever having to take gym class. I have coached skating since I was 16, but with school I have taken a break from it – I really miss it!
Also – I love yoga – particularly the hot variety – the hotter the better!
