So here I sit, the day after the last night of our 6 week barbell class, and I am at a loss for words. Nine members spent the last six Wednesday nights with me breaking down the Olympic lifts and starting from scratch. There were times of frustration throughout the weeks, but many more times of laughter and successes! I was fortunate enough to have a room full of people wanting to learn and willing to put in the time.

We started the class by breaking down the power position and drilling footwork.  We then progressed to the hang position and did some accessory drills to fix some common faults. By the end of the 6-week session, we moved the lifts back down to the floor, and ended with a mock meet (this is where the proud coach comes in!). We had eight of our nine participants complete a mock weightlifting meet where they each received 3 attempts at both the snatch and the clean and jerk. The night started out with a lot of nerves and blank stares, but it ended with all smiles and LOTS of PR’s! Of the heaviest snatch and clean and jerk for each person (16 total lifts), 15 of them were PR’s!!!! I am so excited to see these people progress in their fitness journeys!

“Prior to coming to CrossFit Oshkosh I have never done any type of Olympic lifting in my life. I have to stay that the barbell class was a wonderful opportunity to work on lifting technique, and become more familiar with the movements. It was incredibly helpful to break down the lifts from the very beginning. This allowed you to see where you might need to improve and what you’re strong areas are. It was awesome to be able to work on the progression from week one to week six and break things down movement by movement!
The class gave you a great sense of what you need to focus on to improve lifting technique, to move safely and more efficient. The coaches were both encouraging and supportive pushing you to achieve more each week!  Both Ali and Reagan were great at giving individualized corrections for each person. It was always surprising how fast the hour class went!  Not only did I feel like I learned a lot I also had a ton of fun! And bonus: I was able to PR one of my lifts this week during regular class by 15 pounds!”
