On a daily basis I hear from friends, family, and acquaintances, “I want to take my life back, I want to be healthy again, but I do not know where to start.”  My answer usually is the same across the board: you start now.  You take the stairs not the elevator, you put down the cupcake (or three if you are me), and you find a coach who will develop a personal action plan and help you to become accountable for your activities.  This sounds simple enough, but there are a few keys to success: contact, how to start, and community involvement.

Contact is one of the hardest steps for an individual to take and we understand that.  Just picking up the phone, filling out a request form, or sending an email can be a difficult task when starting something new.  You can take solace in the fact that every single person who has walked through our doors has been in your shoes.  Right now the only difference is those people before you took that second step, after putting down the cupcake, and contacted someone.  This is the key to unlocking a future not hindered by physical weakness, mobility, or dependency.  To move past this initial hurdle, though, you have to know what is on the other side of the door you just unlocked.

When you start at CrossFit Oshkosh, we do not toss you into a class and expect you to perform at a level you and your body are not ready for.  Your initial sessions (5 at least) are one on one or small group.  In these sessions we teach you proper mechanics and range of motion for everything from the squat, to the clean and jerk.  These sessions are imperative to your success and it is not all learning, there is a workout at the end of each session to help acclimate your body to CrossFit and our program.  These sessions also give us, the coaches, a chance to assess your strengths and weaknesses in everything from mobility to stamina.  To learn more about this step click HERE.

At this point you are halfway there, but your most daunting task still lays ahead.  You will now need to take what you have learned and join the regular classes.  One would think this final phase would be simple but over the years I have found this to be the hardest step for people to take.  Exposing yourself to a group of new people can be one of the most stressful situations a person is put in.  I moved a lot in my youth, and every time I started at a new school my anxiety skyrocketed. I felt like I could throw up just walking into that new space.  What you need to take into account when starting at CrossFit Oshkosh is every single person in a class has been in your shoes.  Everyone has had a first class, everyone was wondering if they made the right choice, and everyone you see worked through the first session and moved one step closer to being healthier and stronger than the day before!  This is what makes our community strong: empathy, and support.

Changing your life is a simple process with difficult tasks.  The first step is fighting through the contact hurdle, once this portion is complete you will have a guide to take you the rest of the way to the final impediment of walking through the doors trained and ready to be a part of a supportive, amazing, and awesome community!
